How did CONTROL Resonant come to be? It began not as itself but as a codenamed sequel, Heron, signed by Remedy with publisher 505 Games in 2021. Over five years it grew from a concept into a flagship action-RPG, survived a rights buyback and outside investment, and finally launched as CONTROL Resonant. The development and release timeline is below.
When was the project started?
In June 2021, Remedy announced an agreement with 505 Games, publisher of the 2019 Control, to develop a multiplayer spin-off, FBC: Firebreak, and a larger-budget project expanding the Control universe. That bigger project later surfaced under the codename Heron in Remedy’s May 2022 roadmap.

It was codename Heron
Before it had a public name, the sequel was tracked internally as Heron. Remedy’s then-CEO Tero Virtala said as of February 2023 it had entered proof-of-concept, with detailed concepts covering vision, gameplay, narrative, and art. It stayed in proof-of-concept until around October 2023, then moved to full production in February 2025.
By August 2025, development had shifted to gameplay, environments, and missions. In March 2026 it was reported the game had reached an alpha development stage, and on August 18, 2026 Remedy announced it had gone gold.
Who paid for it?
Funding changed hands mid-development. The game was originally co-published with 505 Games. In February 2024 Remedy bought the full rights to the Control franchise from 505 Games, making CONTROL Resonant (and FBC: Firebreak) self-published going forward.
In August 2024, Remedy partnered with Annapurna Pictures, who fund half of the sequel’s development budget in exchange for rights to expand Remedy’s franchises into film and TV. The initial development budget for the sequel is about €50 million, and Remedy estimated it needs to sell roughly 3 to 4 million copies to break even.
How was it revealed?
The sequel was teased inside the Alan Wake 2 expansion The Lake House in October 2024, via a hidden scene and the Control 2 door symbol. It was publicly revealed as CONTROL Resonant on December 11, 2025, during The Game Awards, with an announcement trailer and the first PlayStation blog post.
A gameplay trailer followed on February 12, 2026 during PlayStation’s State of Play, running on PS5 Pro. The release date was announced June 2, 2026, and the story trailer that accompanied it released June 5, 2026, featuring the Finnish song “Manalan mailla” (“In the Lands of the Underworld”) by Vilma Jää. At Gamescom 2026, an Altered State trailer debuted with the track “Omen” by The Prodigy.
Why was it renamed CONTROL Resonant?
The public name switched from Control 2 to CONTROL Resonant during development. The name Resonant ties into the game’s core: the major boss enemies Dylan defeats are called Resonants, and defeating them grants Dylan new combat abilities, a loop the director says is why the game carries that name.
